What To Do After An Accident

If you have been involved in a traffic accident, whether it involved a car, truck, motorcycle or some other type of vehicle, here are some guidelines of what to do after an accident — including what not to do.

Make Sure You Are Safe

Before you exit your vehicle, make sure that you are able to do so safely. Sometimes there are multiple accidents that follow an initial collision. Once you are safe, make sure you call emergency services for medical attention. Get the medical attention you need and check to see if anyone else needs medical attention.

Gather Information

It may seem like a silly thing to do, but if you are capable of doing so, then it is critical that you gather some information for a potential claim. These days most people have a phone with a camera. Take pictures or video of the scene and the damage, including any injuries. Gather contact information for all involved, including witnesses. If police are there taking a report, make sure to get a badge and report number.

Do Not Talk To The Insurance Company

It may seem rude, but you can refrain from giving the insurance company any information or statements after the accident until you speak with a lawyer. Insurance companies are in the business of minimizing your claim. Some people may minimize injuries at the scene that they realize are actually more serious later on. You don’t want a statement to be used against you later when it is taken out of context. You don’t need to sign anything or waive any rights before you speak with an attorney, and we recommend that you do not do that.
