Be Aware: Electric Shock Drowning Comes With No Warning

We are still in the middle of the summer weather and many people are trying to get in as much fun as possible before the weather turns colder. Kids and adults alike enjoy a good swim at home in the family pool or maybe at a nearby lake or river.

However, there may be a potential danger lurking in these bodies of water that many people may not be aware of. The danger is electric shock drowning. The cause is electricity that enters the water when it shouldn't and there are no warning signs. There are some symptoms to look out for as well as precautionary measures that you can take as outlined here by experts on WebMD.  

What To Know About Electric Shock Drowning:

  • It can be fatal
  • Occurs when an electric current, typically a low level current, enters the water
  • Can paralyze a swimmer who may drown as a result
  • Can happen in any body of water, fresh (more common) or salt water
  • Often from boats, marinas, faulty home swimming pool equipment or hot tub equipment
  • You may feel tingling, become weak and unable to move
  • Happens quickly
  • You cannot see any warning in the water

Prevention Tips

  • Be aware of the potential for danger whenever you are in a body of water
  • Don't swim near a marina or dock if possible
  • Don't jump in after a swimmer you think has been shocked or you are at risk too
  • Call for help and throw a life preserver to anyone you suspect has been shocked
  • Turn off all electricity around the area
  • Have your home pool or hot tub checked by a certified professional annually
  • Make sure your community pool, marina or boat slip is inspected for safety

Make sure that when you go out to enjoy the last days of summer that you do so safety. Don't risk your life or the lives of your family members by swimming where there may be dangerous conditions. It is as simple as taking a few precautions to make sure you make it home safely.
