National Patient Safety Foundation – The NPSF website provides resources for patients and consumers, including information on wrong-site surgery, medication errors, health care-acquired infections, falls, readmissions and diagnostic errors.

Joint Commission for International Patient Safety – The Joint Commission is a nonprofit organization that accredits and certifies health care organizations and programs in the United States. Its website provides guides, videos and literature for patients and the general public.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – The CDC website provides information on detecting and investigating health problems, promoting healthy behaviors and preventing disease, injury and disability.

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services – The CMS website offers Medicaid and CHIP program information, state resources and links to regulations and standards governing the health care industry.

Medicare – The federal government’s official Medicare website provides information on facilities and doctors, preventative health measures, drug and health plans, and other aspects of the Medicare program.

Partnership for Patients – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the CMS formed Partnership for Patients to improve the quality, safety, and affordability of health care, recognizing that “an alarming number of patients are harmed by medical mistakes in the health care system and far too many die prematurely as a result.”

ECRI Institute – The ECRI Institute is a nonprofit organization working to help improve patient care. Its website offers numerous resources and guides to educate patients, including a Comparative Effectiveness Resource Center and Patient Safety Center.
